****
A few days later, I went searching for Prince Nicholaus and Princess Cindy. They’d become quite good friends recently, and were entertaining the prince’s younger sisters, Marie-Grace and Cecile. Princess Elvira was presumably skulking in her room.
“Excuse me, prince, princesses,” I said, “Can I have Prince Nicholaus and Princess Cindy for a little bit?”
“Of course,” said the prince. Then, to his sisters, “Be good, girls.”
They stood up and came to follow me.
We went to a secluded corner of the castle so I could show them what I had. It was a golden box.
“What’s in the box, Cupie?” The prince asked me.
“Beautiful glass slippers. Whoever they fit is queen.”
“How is that useful? I don’t want a queen yet!”
“If they don’t fit either Elvira or I,” Princess Cindy pointed out, “You’ll be fine.”
We all took a look at the beautiful shoes and Nicholaus urged Cindy to try them on.
“They fit,” said Cindy, wondering.
“Then you must be queen…but how?” Nicholaus wondered as well, “Because we don’t love each other-and don’t plan to.”
We sat there thinking for a moment when I saw something out of the corner of my eye.
It was Princess Elvira, spying!
“Hurry,” I said, “Someone is watching.”
We stowed away the shoes, and I saw Elvira flit away.
“Be careful,” I said, “We’re being watched. I’ll see you all at the ball in a week’s time.”
Nicholaus and Cindy left.
This was going to go very, very badly if that dreaded Elvira had anything to do with it.
